Everyone is talking about using ChatGPT for mental health advice. But is it safe? Here is the therapist’s guide to the pros, cons, and privacy risks of AI therapy.
Everyone is talking about using ChatGPT for mental health advice. But is it safe? Here is the therapist’s guide to the pros, cons, and privacy risks of AI therapy.
It’s 2 AM. You are spiraling with anxiety, and your therapist’s office doesn’t open for another seven hours. So, you open your phone and type into ChatGPT: “How do I stop a panic attack?”
You aren’t alone. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes a part of our daily lives, more people are turning to chatbots for mental health support.
It makes sense. AI is accessible, affordable, and available 24/7. But before you swap your therapy session for a chat window, there are critical things you need to know about what AI can do, and the dangerous things it can’t.
At Olde Port Counseling, we believe in using the best tools available for your mental health. Here is our professional breakdown of where AI fits into your mental health journey.
The Good: Where AI shines as a tool
Let’s be clear: AI isn’t all bad. In fact, for specific mental health tasks, it can be a helpful supplement to traditional therapy.
- 24/7 Availability: Anxiety doesn’t keep office hours. AI can provide immediate grounding techniques or breathing exercises in the middle of the night.
- Organization & Executive Function: AI is excellent at breaking down overwhelming tasks. If you have ADHD or anxiety paralysis, asking an AI to “break this cleaning project into 5 small steps” can be a game changer.
- Journaling Prompts: If you feel stuck, AI can generate endless reflection questions to help you get your thoughts flowing before your next real therapy session.
The bad: The risks you need to watch for
While it is a useful tool, it is a dangerous master. Here is why you should be cautious about relying on it for care.
- The “Hallucination” Problem: AI models are designed to predict the next word in a sentence, not to tell the truth. They are known to “hallucinate,” confidently stating facts that are completely made up. When it comes to medical or psychological advice, a made-up fact can be dangerous.
- The Privacy Nightmare: What happens in your therapist’s office stays in your therapist’s office (HIPAA). What happens in a chatbot stays… in the cloud. Most public AI tools use your conversations to train their future models. If you are typing your deepest traumas or darkest thoughts into a free app, you are likely handing that data over to a tech company, not a healthcare provider.
- Lack of Nuance: AI lacks context. It might offer generic advice that is technically “correct” but harmful for your specific situation. It doesn’t know your history, your trauma triggers, or your family dynamics unless you type them in every single time.
The Missing piece: Why AI cannot replace a therapist
The biggest limitation of AI isn’t technical, it’s relational.
Decades of research show that the number one predictor of success in therapy isn’t the modality (CBT, DBT, etc.), it is the therapeutic alliance. It is the relationship between the client and the counselor.
- It Cannot “Witness” You: A chatbot processes text; it does not feel empathy. It cannot see the micro-expression on your face that says you are holding back tears. It cannot offer the profound human comfort of simply being witnessed by another person without judgment.
- It Cannot Challenge You: AI is designed to be a “yes man.” It will often validate whatever you say to keep the conversation going. A good therapist will gently challenge you, call out your blind spots, and push you to grow. A chatbot comforts you; a therapist helps you change.
the verdict: use the tool, keep the guide
So, should you use AI for your mental health?
Think of AI like a self-help book or a journal. It is a fantastic resource for gathering information, organizing your thoughts, or finding a quick coping skill.
But think of a Therapist as your personal trainer. We are here to spot you when the weight gets heavy, correct your form so you don’t get hurt, and push you to reach a level of mental fitness you couldn’t reach alone.
Don’t settle for a simulation of care.
